Quadram Institute

The Quadram Institute is at the forefront of a new era of food and health research, working at the interface between food science, gut microbiology and human health. We develop solutions to worldwide challenges in food-related disease and human health, with a lifelong focus from establishing optimum health at birth through to ensuring we age healthily.

Located on the Norwich Research Park, our science is highly interdisciplinary, combining expertise in food science, microbiology, genomics and clinical research. In a state-of-the-art building, our microbiologists, genomic scientists, gut biologists, nutrition researchers and NHS clinicians work together at the frontier of food and health research.

We use the latest technologies in innovative new ways to make discoveries in food and health bioscience. The Quadram Institute is a UK national science capability, strategically supported by the UKRI-Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Our scientists work closely with industry partners in impactful networks such as the UK Food Safety Research Network and the Biofortification Hub. Our capabilities include the National Collection of Yeast Cultures (NCYC) which is the UK’s yeast collection and provides services for the brewing and baking industries. The team offers yeast identification, consultancy and contract research services.

The institute’s Food and Nutrition National Bioscience Research Infrastructure team provides new and updated data and knowledge on food composition and intake. The team works on new tools around dietary intake assessment, integrating Big Data, mobile devices and wearables and personalised nutrition. The team also maintains the UK’s food datasets, published in McCance and Widdowson’s Composition of Food and Integrated Dataset (CoFID).
